Wawa Opening First Store in DC

With stores in Maryland and Virginia, Wawa, the Philadelphia-based chain of convenience stores, will open its first store in D.C. Thursday with a ribbon ceremony at 9 a.m.

At 8 a.m. Thursday, the first 100 customers will receive free Wawa coffee, breakfast sandwiches known as Sizzlis or submarine sandwiches known as hoagies for a month, T-shirts and more.

nAlthough founded in Pennsylvania, the D.C. store is the largest in the country, at 9,200 square feet.

Located at 1111 19th St. NW, the 24-hour store is offering an upscale urban feel with an outdoor patio, bar seating, a digital touch screen display filled with Wawa fun facts and free wifi.

nThe grand ceremony will focus on hunger-fighting initiatives through the “Lending a Helping Hoagie” campaign. To help fight hunger during the holidays, Wawa plans to donate up to $5,000 of hoagie sales to the Capital Area Food Bank.

The Capital Area Food Bank will also receive a $1,000 grant to help launch its “Fresh Community Market” initiative as part of its Family Market program.

nThose in attendance include U.S. Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-Pa.), Wawa President and CEO Chris Gheysens and Miss District of Columbia 2017 Briana Kinsey.

nWawa has a second D.C. location under construction in Georgetown.
