First Look: Air and Space Museum to Get $650M Renovation

The Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum will get a $650 million renovation, officials announced Wednesday.

More than 350 million people have visited the museum since it opened in 1976.

Construction is scheduled to begin during the summer of 2018. The first updated exhibits are set to open in 2021.

The museum said it will raise $250 million for new exhibitions through private sources. New artifacts will include the Apollo 11 command module, officials said.

“We’re developing innovative ways to experience America’s favorite museum through exhibitions that merge modern technology and design,” said Jack Dailey, a director of the museum.
