St. Mary's County Sheriff's deputies were able to convince a Hollywood man to surrender after negotiating with him for seven-and-a-half hours Saturday morning.

Police say that the unidentified 53-year-old was armed with a firearm when he barricaded himself inside a structure on Mervell Dean Road and threatened to harm himself.

Authorities arrived on the scene at around 3 a.m. Saturday and say the man began shooting at them. As a result, police established a perimeter and closed all roads adjacent to the area, including Maryland Route 235. Deputies also implemented a "Code Red Alert," and neighbors were given safety instructions.

After speaking to negotiators, the man agreed to surrender at around 10:30 a.m. and was taken to St. Mary's County Hospital for evaluation. No charges have yet been filed, though the investigation is continuing. All previously closed roads are now open.
