A Howard County police officer was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries after being struck by a drunk driver late Friday evening.

The accident happened on the eastbound side of Maryland Route 40 at the intersection with Route 29 at around 11:45 p.m.

Investigators say that Pfc. Terrance Sheppard was conducting a traffic stop of a BMW when he was struck by a Kia Sorento driven by 45-year-old Sung Ok Jang of Ellicott City. The Sorento then careened into the BMW before coming to a stop.

Sheppard was taken to Howard County General Hospital, where he is listed in stable condition. Jang was arrested at the scene for driving under the influence.
