The organization We the Dogs DC is behind the book. The seven women who run the nonprofit met through their dogs' Instagram accounts, executive director Amber Duggan said. They founded the organization because they wanted to do more than just admire each others' pets.

"We wanted to do something that helped rescue organizations in the area," said Duggan, who works as a government lawyer by day.

All the photos that will appear in the book were submitted by local dog owners. We the Dogs received more than 430 submissions and is working to narrow it down to 150, Duggan said. The photos you see here are in the running.

In June 2017, the women behind We the Dogs DC held a benefit event that raised more than $10,000 for animal organizations. Then, they formed the nonprofit in August.

The group runs the We the Dogs DC Instagram account. Anyone can sign up to run the account for a day and post three to six photos of their dog enjoying life in the D.C. area. "The account is a great way to share new dog-friendly places and to get to know other dog owners in the community," Duggan said.
