Fire at Columbia Heights Apartment Building Evacuates Residents

Residents of a Columbia Heights apartment building were evacuated due to a fire Wednesday morning

Residents of a Columbia Heights apartment building were evacuated as one tenant's home was destroyed by fire Wednesday morning.

D.C. firefighters were called to the 1400 block of Newton Street NW shortly before 8 a.m., where they found smoke and fire coming from an apartment.

The resident of the apartment where the fire began told News4's Richard Jordan that she was with her two grandsons, ages 16 and 9, when the blaze began. She tried to put the fire out herself and burned her hand in the process.

Her apartment was destroyed. Flames did not spread to other units.

Medics are evaluating a child, but the child's injuries are not serious, a fire official said. No one else was reported injured.

There is no word on a cause of the fire at this time.
