Man Dies After Trying to Swim Ashore

A man died after trying to swim ashore in the darkness at Mill Point in St. Mary's County, Md., Natural Resources Police said.

Tyrone Pettiford, 52, of Chaptico, was fishing with a friend late Sunday. After their boat ran aground about 50 yards from shore, Pettiford tried to swim to shore. His friend saw in disappear under the water and called 911.

Pettiford's body will be sent to the medical examiner's office in Baltimore for an autopsy.
