A man was found guilty of first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of the mother of a U.S. Naval Academy midshipman in June 2021, the Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney’s Office said.

President Joe Biden told Naval Academy graduates Friday that they will be “representatives and defenders of our democracy,” as free societies are under threat from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to China’s maritime expansion.

President Joe Biden honored the late Sen. John McCain during a commencement speech at the Naval Academy, the site of McCain’s 2018 funeral and grave. “He was a man of great principle and capacity. He always lived by a code… We often disagreed but we were close friends.”

From the pandemic and supply chain issues to global warming and Russia’s war on Ukraine, President Joe Biden challenged the graduates to lead the world through adversity during his commencement speech to the Naval Academy on Friday.
