Missing Blind Man Spotted in New Jersey

Mitchell Smith has been riding Amtrak

A blind man who has been missing for 12 days has been spotted in New Jersey.

Mitchell Smith, 33, was missing since Dec. 17. He went to D.C. to visit relatives, but disappeared on the train ride home to Birmingham, Ala. He was last seen at a train station in Charlotte, N.C.

The Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department said Thursday that Amtrak Police tracked Smith's movements and was able to determine that he purchased a return ticket to Newark, N.J., on Dec. 17 after his arrival in Charlotte. He arrived in New Jersey at approximately 8 p.m. and was assisted into a cab by a New Jersey Transit Police Officer.

CMPD detectives have closed their case, and said the family has been in touch with authorities in New Jersey.

Smith's grandmother said he spent one day in a hospital in Newark, but that someone picked him up and he hasn't made contact with his family since. The family will be in contact with New Jersey authorities again tomorrow.

Smith lost his vision after being shot in the head several years ago. He has a scar on the right side of his head near his right eye and a possible smaller scar on the left side of his head. He will sometimes wear dark glasses due to his injury and carries a red and white cane.
