A Stafford County, Va., fire truck driver was not responsible for a pedestrian fatality Friday night in Fredericksburg, Va., according to the Stafford County Sheriff's Office.
The unidentified driver was responding to a call for automobile accident when he hit 69-year-old John Whitehurst of North Myrtle Beach, S.C., who was crossing six-lane
Whitehurst was in a dark area and not in a crosswalk and the fire truck's lights and siren were activated, according to the sheriff's office. The driver tried to avoid hitting him.
Medical crews rushed Whitehurst to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Witnesses confirmed the sheriff's investigation, the sheriff's office said.
The sheriff's office is awaiting a toxicology report on Whitehurst.
