Dogs Sniff Out Bedbugs

CROFTON, Md. -- Beth Nelson and her dog, Blanca, want to help make sure bedbugs aren't around to bite.

Nelson, of Crofton, is co-owner of Canine Scent Investigations. She and her detection dog go anywhere from homes to hotel chains, sniffing out the tiny, biting critters.

The Annapolis Police Department sergeant and her business partner, Cpl. Chris Tucker, have a combined 18 years of experience with scent-detection police dogs trained to find narcotics.

They're often called because the homeowner or facility manager has exhausted other options.

Because of the bugs' nocturnal nature and ability to hide in small crevices, even trained pest-control workers have may difficulty finding them.
