A District Heights police officer was indicted on an attempted murder charge after authorities say he shot a handcuffed suspect in the back.
Johnnie Riley, a sergeant with the department, turned himself in Thursday afternoon to face charges including attempted murder and assault, Prince George’s County prosecutors said. He faces a bond review hearing Friday morning.
Riley is accused of shooting Kalvin Kyle in September after a traffic stop. Authorities said Riley pulled Kyle over on suspicion of riding a stolen motorcycle and put him in the back of a police cruiser to secure the scene. As Kyle took off running, Riley allegedly shot him in the back. Kyle survived the shooting but was injured.
A phone message left with Riley's attorney wasn't immediately returned.
