DC Police Launch Probe of Sergeant After Jacks Testimony

Sergeant gave conflicting reports about visit to Jacks' home

WASHINGTON -- The D.C. Police Department is investigating a sergeant who said he filed an inaccurate report about his visit to Banita Jacks' home, a department spokeswoman said.

Sgt. James Lafranchise filed the report in January 2008 after visiting the Jacks home in April 2007. In it, he said he had not seen Jacks' oldest daughter Brittany. But in a follow-up report, Lafranchise wrote that he "thought" he had seen the girl and her sisters.

On Wednesday, the officer testified at Jacks' trial that he had not seen Brittany and acknowledged that his earlier accounts were "inaccurate."

Lafranchise did nothing wrong by filing the reports months after his visit, department spokeswoman Traci Hughes said. Due to the discrepancies in his accounts, the department is launching an internal investigation, Hughes said.
