D.C. Councilman Harry Thomas Settles Student Loan Lawsuit

Agrees to monthly payments to settle suit with US government

D.C. Councilman Harry Thomas Jr. reached an agreement with the federal government to repay an outstanding student loan.

Thomas apparently owes about $16,000 in student loans he obtained in the 1980s. The government said he's agreed to make monthly payments. The settlement was announced during a court hearing Wednesday morning.

This isn’t the only legal trouble Thomas faces.

Federal agents raided his home two weeks ago. It was part of an investigation into whether Thomas diverted more than $300,000 in city funds for personal use.

Thomas has denied any wrongdoing related to that matter.
