A New Leash on Life

Alexandria residents could be fined for tethering their dogs

OK, so you can't really compare having dogs with having kids. But one definite advantage of dogs? Never having to hire a baby-sitter.

But that doesn't necessarily mean you can leave them unattended. The Alexandria City Council is considering an ordinance to ban dog owners from keeping pets tied up outside for more than an hour.

If the ordinance passes, it would affect people who tether their dogs outside restaurants or at their homes. Violators could be fined $50.

City officials it would protect dogs from neglectful owners. The council is expected to take up the measure next month.
