WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington Monument will reopen after being closed for nearly a week because of problems with its elevator.
National Park Service spokesman Mike Litterst said in an email that the monument will open at 9 a.m. Friday. It was closed last Sunday.
Litterst says this week’s work on the elevator included replacing two sheave, or pulley, bearings. Officials say one of the bearings had failed.
Litterst also says officials have started the design process to modernize and upgrade the control system and other equipment to the often-malfunctioning elevator.
