WASHINGTON -- We got some really sad news from the U Street Corridor this morning. The co-owner of a popular organic restaurant was found dead Monday night.

D.C. police received a report of an unconscious person at a home in the 3600 block of 16th Street NW at about 9 p.m., police said. They found 38-year-old Nori Amaya unconscious and not breathing in her apartment.

Concerned individuals checked on Amaya after she hadn't been heard from in two days.

Amaya co-owned Coppi's Organic Restaurant at 14th and U streets in Northwest with her brother, Carlos Amaya. The restaurant opened in 1993.

Nori Amaya's death has been ruled a homicide. The cause of death was determined to be strangulation.

Carlos Amaya said the restaurant will be open Tuesday evening.
