Md. Man Sentenced to 20 Years in Kidnapping of 6-Year-Old Girls

A Prince George's County man was sentenced to 66 years in prison with all but 20 suspended for luring two young girls out of a store.

Charles Amofa of Hyattsville pleaded guilty in April to kidnapping, sexual offenses and solicitation of a minor.

In July 2012, the 27-year-old Amofa approached a 6-year-old girl in a Hyattsville Value Village store and told her the store manager had something for her, authorities said. He led her out of the store and down the street where he tried to force her into a house, but the girl fled.

A month later, Amofa approached a 6-year-old girl who had become separated from her father at the same store and lured her outside by offering her a toy, police said.

They say he then took her to a nearby playground and tried to sexually assault her.

The girl's father had called police, and an officer saw Amofa with the child near the playground and separated him from her. Backup units arrested him.

"She seemed very desperate, and the only thing coming out of her mouth was, 'I want my daddy. I want my daddy,'" Officer Fredys Castro-Rivas said. "The only thing I could think of at that point was she doesn't have her daddy but she does have me which is the next person in charge out here on the streets."
