Two Girls Taken From Thrift Store; One Sexually Assaulted

Chillum man arrested

In separate incidents, a Maryland man abducted girls from a Hyattsville thrift store, sexually assaulting one of them, according to Prince George’s County police.

A 6-year-old girl got separated from her father inside the Value Village Thrift Store on University Boulevard in Hyattsville early Monday afternoon, police said. She was approached by Charles Amofa, of Chillum, who managed to get the girl to go with him by being nice and offering her a toy.

Amofa allegedly took the girl to nearby West Park Playground in Lewisdale and sexually assaulted her, police said.

The girl's father called police, and an officer observed Amofa with the child near the playground and separated him from her. Backup units arrested Amofa.

"She seemed very desperate, and the only thing coming out of her mouth was, 'I want my daddy. I want my daddy,'" Officer Fredys Castro-Rivas said. "The only thing I could think of at that point was she doesn't have her daddy but she does have me which is the next person in charge out here on the streets."

Amofa also confessed to taking an 8-year-old girl from the same thrift store on July 9 and attempting to sexually assault her, police said. Police were actively investigating that case.
