The carcass of a 25-foot humpback whale has been found floating in a Virginia river.
The whale was first sighted on Saturday in the York River near Gloucester Point, said David Malmquist of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science.
Humpbacks are found in oceans and seas around the world.
Malmquist said the whale's appearance in the York River is uncommon.
According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, humpbacks have been listed as endangered since 1970.
Biologists are investigating the cause of the whale's death.
