A District police officer was laid to rest today.

Family and friends along with hundreds of police officers said goodbye to 32-year-old Paul Dittamo. His funeral was held at the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Lake Ridge, Va.

Dittamo was based at the 7th District police station in southeast D.C. He was a rookie police officer, having joined the force just last June.

He died Saturday in a car crash. Police said his cruiser hit a utility pole on Morse Road in Southeast at about 1:30 a.m. His partner was also seriously injured in the crash but is expected to survive.

Bagpipes were played during Dittamo's funeral procession. Fellow officers also saluted the hearse carrying the officer as it passed the station where he worked each day.
