Court: Driver Drank, Smoked Pot Prior to Hitting Seven on New Year's Day

A man accused of running his car up onto a sidewalk, striking seven people early New Year’s Day, appeared in court Tuesday, saying he had previously struck a car moments before hitting the people.

Malik Lloyd, 25, of Northeast Washington, was charged with driving under the influence, leaving after colliding and reckless driving. Police arrested him near the Barcode Lounge, close to the Farragut North Metro station.

In a court document, Lloyd told police he was driving the car because its owner had been too drunk to drive. He admitted he had been drinking and smoking marijuana prior to getting behind the wheel.

Officers at the scene reported Lloyd had bloodshot eyes and could smell alcohol on his breath.

His attorneys said Lloyd shouldn’t be charged with the accident, since he was knocked unconscious by hitting a car prior to running up on the sidewalk. Seven people were struck in front of the club early New Year’s Day, including a bouncer for the Barcode Lounge.

In court, the prosecution said Lloyd was currently on release for a drug conviction charge and has a history of drug and gun charges against him. The judge ruled Lloyd would be held without bond and back in court on Jan. 20.
