Washington elevates Nate Orchard to the active roster; Ioannidis to IR originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington
The Washington Football Team has promoted linebacker Nate Orchard to its active roster and placed defensive tackle Matt Ioannidis on injured reserve, the team announced on Tuesday.
Ioannidis suffered a torn bicep during Washington's Week 3 loss to the Browns this past weekend, a prognosis that will likely end his season. The 26-year-old led Washington in sacks last season with 8.5.
However, Ioannidis' injury gives Orchard another chance at any opportunity to play at the NFL level, something he took advantage of last year.
Orchard, 27, was installing windows last season before Washington came calling in late November with a need at pass rusher. In his first game with Washington -- ironically against head coach Ron Rivera in Carolina -- Orchard posted two tackles for loss, one sack and the game-sealing fumble recovery.
After the game, Orchard became emotional when speaking about his journey with NBC Sports Washington's JP Finlay.
"I might get a little emotional," Orchard told Finlay, wiping away tears. "My family, we've been through a lot. So, to come out and represent myself and my family, it means everything. Just grateful for the organization to give me an opportunity to play the game that I love."
Washington originally re-signed Orchard to a one-year deal in March, but the linebacker was released during final roster cuts in September. He was placed on the team's practice squad shortly after.
While the Ioannidis' loss is a massive one for Washington's defensive front, it also gives Orchard another chance to prove he can play at the NFL level. And the pass rusher certainly won't take that for granted.
