Reports: Ravens Hire Anthony Weaver as DL Coach, Rob Ryan as ILB Coach

Reports: Ravens hire Anthony Weaver as DL coach, Rob Ryan as ILB coach originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington

The Ravens have hired Anthony Weaver as their run game coordinator/defensive line coach and Rob Ryan as their inside linebackers coach, according to multiple reports.

ESPN’s Dianna Russini reported the Weaver news and Jamison Hensley was first on the Ryan hire.

Weaver and Ryan will replace defensive line coach Joe Cullen, who left to be the defensive coordinator for the Jaguars, and linebackers coach Mike Macdonald, who left to be the defensive coordinator at Michigan.

Weaver was a second round pick of the Ravens in 2002 and played in Baltimore for four seasons as a defensive lineman. In his four years, he played in 57 games and started 54, with 14.5 sacks and 144 tackles. He ended his career with three seasons in Houston and began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at the University of Florida in 2010.

Since then, he’s coached the defensive line for the Jets, Bills, Browns and Texans (where he was also the defensive coordinator). In 2007, he won the Ed Block Courage Award.

The other Ravens hire was Ryan, the son of Buddy and twin brother of former Ravens defensive coordinator Rex.

Ravens defensive coordinator Don “Wink” Martindale remains close with both of the Ryan brothers. Rob and Martindale both previously worked together in Oakland, where Rob was the defensive coordinator and Martindale was the inside linebackers coach, roles they held on the same staff from 2004-2007.

Rob last coached in Washington, where he was the inside linebackers coach in 2019. Before that, he was the assistant head coach in Buffalo in 2016, the defensive coordinator in New Orleans from 2013-2015 and the coordinator in Dallas, Cleveland and Oakland.

He was also the linebackers coach for the New England Patriots from 2000-2003, where he won two Super Bowls.

The Ravens still have another move to make on their defensive staff, as they need to hire a pass defense coordinator to replace Jesse Minter, who left to become the defensive coordinator at Vanderbilt.
