Terps to play JMU for second time ever after schedule change originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington
Maryland men’s basketball will take on James Madison at 3 p.m. Saturday in lieu of its originally scheduled Tuesday game against Towson that was canceled due to a positive coronavirus test in the Tigers’ locker room, the Terps announced Tuesday. The game will be broadcast on NBC Sports Washington.
The game will take place at the Dukes’ brand-new Atlantic Union Bank Center in a rare instance of Maryland traveling to face a mid-major school. The Terps have only played six road games against non-ACC/ Big Ten opponent since the 2010-11 season, last doing so against Seton Hall last year.
Saturday will mark only the second time these two programs have played each other, with the last game being an 80-76 win for the Terps on Jan. 28, 1987. According to Maryland Athletics, that game saw Derrick Lewis record the first triple-double in Terps history with 29 points, 23 rebounds and 12 blocks.
Under new head coach Mark Byington, JMU is off to a 2-1 start following wins over Limestone University (Division II) and Radford as well as 83-73 loss at the hands of Norfolk State. The Terps (3-0) have won all three of their games by 18 or more points and received a few votes toward this week’s AP Top 25 poll.
With the schedule change, Maryland will be tasked with playing its first back-to-back this season after they play George Mason on Friday. The Terps haven’t played consecutive regular season games since Nov. 24-25, 2015, when they participated in the 2015 Cancun Challenge and beat Illinois State and Rhode Island in back-to-back days.
