The Washington Capitals have re-signed forward Troy Brouwer to a three-year extension worth $11 million, the team announced in a release Wednesday.
"We are pleased to sign Troy Brouwer to a contract extension," General Manager George McPhee said in the release. “Troy is a physical and versatile power forward who can play both wings and who has averaged close to 20 goals in the past three seasons. He is a Stanley Cup winner and a great leader. We are thrilled that he will continue his career in Washington for many years to come.”
In his first season in Washington after being acquired in a draft day trade last June, Brouwer scored 18 goals and accumulated 33 points in 82 games. The 27-year-old quickly became a leader on and off the ice, earning a role as an alternate captain. He is also the only member of the Caps to have won a Stanley Cup, doing so with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2010.
Brouwer is now under contract with the Caps for four years; he still has one year remaining on the two-year deal he signed with Washington upon his arrival last summer.
