Runner Breaks American Record at Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run

A Colorado man broke the American 10-mile run record in Washington, D.C., Sunday morning.

Stanley Kebenei finished fourth in the Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run in an even 46 minutes — 13 seconds faster than the previous record. Greg Meyer ran 10 miles in 46:13 March 27, 1983 — a record that also was set in D.C., according to USA Track & Field.

“I’m glad I got this American record,” Kebenei told WTOP. “It’s something that I’ve dreamed since 2017. I came here and won but I didn’t get the record. Today I came, I didn’t win, I got the record, so it’s a great day.”

Kebenei won the race in 2017 in 46:36.

Jemal Yimer of Ethiopia won Sunday’s race in 45:36.
