A long-time employee of the Marine Barracks was struck and killed by a moving truck Thursday.
Crews responded to 11th and Eye streets in Southeast D.C. around 11 a.m. where they found a large Enterprise moving truck had struck a woman, identified as Julie Phillips, while she was crossing the road.
Phillips had worked at the Marine Barracks cafeteria for 17 years, through a company that helps find work for disabled individuals.
"It's a loss. She was my friend," Phillips' co-worker Hubert Hackney said. "I'm going to miss her."
Hackney said he was surprised the accident even happened because Phillips always "crosses the street at the corner."
The cause of the crash has not yet been released, but the driver did remain on scene.
