Police Investigate Assaults Near Metro Stations

Police in the District are investigating at least two incidents in which people walking near Metro stations were "sucker punched" and robbed by groups of teens.

A woman was punched and robbed while walking in the 1300 block of U Street NW at 2:30 a.m. Saturday. Police said five suspects, described as teens, ran from the scene and were arrested en route to the U Street Metro station.

News4's Jackie Bensen spoke with a man who says he was attacked while walking along 8th Street SE from the Eastern Market Metro station at approximately 5 a.m. last week. He was punched by two teenagers, knocking off his glasses.

"I got up and said, 'Wait a second. I'm blind... you kids are basically the same age as my kids. You guys are not leaving here until you find where my glasses are,'" the man told News4.

He said the two suspects returned his glasses and wallet -- sans cash -- and ran from the scene, apologizing.
