Weekend Explosion Displaces Three From Apartment Building

Vapors from fumigants ignite, blow out windows

FAIRFAX, Va. -- Fire investigators have charged a Fairfax County man and woman after an accidental apartment explosion that displaced three people.

Lawrence Fry, 55, and Evelyn Garcia-Williams, 52, didn't properly control fumigants in their Fairfax County Redevelopment and Housing Authority apartment, according to the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department.

Saturday afternoon, firefighters were called to the 7500 block of Broadway Drive because of an explosion that blew out several windows and a sliding glass door. The explosion happened because vapors from fumigants ignited, investigators said.

The county housing authority owns the three-story garden apartment building. Fire investigators estimated damage at $20,000.
