Violent Afternoon in the District

Three deadly shootings within two hours

    The violence must stop.

That was the strong message district leaders delivered after three people were gunned down in two hours Wednesday afternoon.

The first shooting happened just after 3:00 pm on Nannie Helen Burroughs Avenue in Northeast Washington.  Police found a man shot several times, lying on the ground.

An hour-and-a-half later, police found a man with a gunshot wound on Wheeler Road in Southeast.  He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Then just minutes later, another man was shot to death near 22nd Street and Alabama Avenue in Southeast.  That victim has been identified as 37 year old David Tucker of District Heights, Maryland.

"We've driven violent crime down east of the river this year in numbers that we've been trying to do for years, and it's time to say enough is enough," Police Chief Cathy Lanier said in a news conference Wednesday evening.

Lanier is urging anyone with information about any violent crime to call police.
