Va. Correction Van Crashes; Driver Dies, Inmates Injured

An investigation is under way into the crash of a Virginia Department of Corrections van that killed the driver and injured several prisoners.

The crash occurred Saturday in King George County. Police said the van ran off State Route 3 and crashed into trees.

The Free Lance-Star reported the driver, Dennis Toombs, 33, was taken to Mary Washington Hospital, where he died.

Toombs was transporting nine prisoners from a job site in Westmoreland County to the Stafford Men's Diversion Center.

Prisoners told police that most of them were sleeping when the crash took place. Several were hospitalized overnight.
