About 50,000 people braved the heat and humidity to take part in the annual Susan G. Komen Global Race for the Cure -- and a whole lot of them wore pink to do it.
The 5K run/walk got underway around 8 a.m. Saturday at 7th street and Madison Drive N.W.
"Mammograms, breast exams, we are the cure!" chanted onlookers.
Organizers hoped to raise more than $6.3 million to pay for breast cancer education and breast health services.
"It's been a thrilling time in terms of research," said one planner. "You're seeing a lot more focus on prevention. We've unlocked a lot more answers than we had even ten years ago: knowing different types of breast cancer, how it impacts different people.
