Suspect Arrested in Northeast DC Gas Station Killing

Police arrested a suspect in the killing of a 68-year-old clerk at a gas station in Northeast D.C.

Nazir Ahmad, of Laurel, Maryland, was shot to death Nov. 3, police said.

Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force members arrested 32-year-old Demetrius Pierce on a charge of second-degree murder Monday.

Surveillance video showed a man wearing a black hooded jacket, red baseball cap and ripped jeans walk into the Valero gas station in the 900 block of Brentwood Road NE.

Nazir's coworker, Mohamed Hegazy, previously told News4 the gunman had been hiding outside the gas station until about 6 a.m., when Ahmad stepped away to use the restroom.

He was about to end his shift and thought the door was locked, Hegazy said.

Ahmad returned when the suspect went inside the store and grabbed the cash box, according to Hegazy.

The gunman pushed Ahmad into a back room, Hegazy said, and shot him. Then he shut the door and ran away.

Video shows the suspect trying to leave with the cash box, apparently having difficulty opening the door to get out. He then shoots the glass door to escape.

Police responded to a call for the sound of gunshots.

Ahmad was unconscious, not breathing and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, police said. Ahmad was pronounced dead at a hospital.
