Capitol Police to Close Streets for State of the Union

President Barack Obama gives his State of the Union Address Wednesday evening.  You know what that means -- road closures galore.

So if you'll be in downtown Washington, you could face some traffic challenges.

For security reasons, a number of streets around the U.S. Capitol will be closed during the president's State of the Union Address, starting at 7:30 p.m.:

  • D Street between 2nd Street, NE & Louisiana Avenue, NW
  • C Street between 2nd Street, NE & Louisiana Avenue, NW
  • Constitution Avenue between 2nd Street, NE & Louisiana Avenue, NW
  • Delaware Avenue between Columbus Circle & Constitution Avenue, NE
  • New Jersey Avenue between Louisiana Avenue, NW & D Street, NW
  • Pennsylvania Avenue between 1st Street, NW & 3rd Street, NW
  • East Capitol Street between 2nd Street & 1st Street
  • 1st Street between Columbus Circle, NE & C Street, SE
  • 1st Street between Louisiana Avenue, NW and Washington Avenue, SW
  • Maryland Avenue between 1st Street, SW & 3rd Street, SW
  • Independence Avenue between 2nd Street, SE & Washington Avenue, SW
  • C Street between 1st Street, SE & Washington Avenue, SW
  • Delaware Avenue between Washington Avenue, SW & C Street, SW
  • New Jersey Avenue between Independence Avenue, SE & D Street, SE
  • South Capitol Street between Independence Avenue & D Street
  • In addition, Capitol Square will be off limits to pedestrians beginning at 6 p.m.

Here's something else to keep in mind: Hundreds of hockey fans will be heading to the Verizon Center Wednesday night for the Capitals game, a situation that will likely add to the traffic troubles in that part of town.

And if you're watching the SOTU at home or at a local watering hole, don't forget that you can chime in with some follow-up questions, which may be answered by the president himself next week during a live online event from the White House.
