Shot Alexandria Officer Peter Laboy Receives Gold Award for Valor

The Alexandria police officer shot in the head during a traffic stop last year was recognized at the Valor Awards in Old Town Thursday along with the men and women who helped save his life.

Officer Peter Laboy received Alexandria's Gold Award for Valor, the highest honor an Alexandria police officer can receive.

Doctors didn't expect Laboy to survive, but he has defied the odds thanks in large part to the quick action of his colleagues, who were also honored Thursday.

Last month, Kashif Bashir, the man accused of shooting Laboy, was ruled incompetent to stand trial for a second time. He was ordered to a state mental health facility, and his case was postponed indefinitely.
