A taxi driver was killed in a head-on crash Monday on the George Washington Memorial Parkway in Fairfax County, Virginia.
Three other people sustained life-threatening injuries in the crash, which happened between Tulane Drive and Morningside Lane in the Belle View area.
According to a preliminary investigation, a Volkswagen Beetle traveling south crossed over the center line and collided head-on with a taxi traveling north, U.S. Park Police said.
The taxi driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said he was a 55-year-old Springfield man, but his name was being withheld at his family's request.
Police said two passengers from the taxi were airlifted to a hospital. A third person was taken to a hospital in an ambulance.
Both directions of traffic were closed while police assessed the crash, but the parkway later reopened.
Local politicians said they want safety changes to the area now, especially because of potential safety threats, like a lack of overhead lights.

"This road was built in 1933 and it was constructed to be a scenic highway for people sort of leisurely driving from Washington down to Mount Vernon through the countryside while looking at the river," Virginia State Sen. Scott Surovell said. "One of the things I've suggested to the Park Service is to put up speed cameras at the intersections."
