Two firefighters are injured and about a dozen residents of a senior citizens' community in Silver Spring, Maryland, were displaced after a fire ripped through an apartment building Monday afternoon.
The fire erupted in the Leisure World homes on the 3600 block of Gleneagles Drive, a Montgomery County fire department representative said. The blaze appears to have started in a first-floor unit and extended to eight other homes.
Workers assisted a 90-year-old woman out of the apartment where the fire started.
Two firefighters suffered minor injuries when a ceiling in the two-story building collapsed, the fire department said. No residents were hurt. One dog found unconscious was rescued and revived, but a cat died.
The fire is believed to be accidental and electrical in origin.
