Montgomery Co. Police Officer Credited With Saving Baby's Life

A Montgomery County police officer is being credited with saving the life of a 1-month-old baby girl in the White Oak Shopping Center parking lot.

Officer David Reed said a shopper alerted him to a woman holding an unconscious baby and crying in the front seat of a car Thursday night.

He said the woman was unresponsive to his questions. He took the baby, rubbed her sternum, did chest compressions and stroked her back until she took a deep breath and started crying.

"I'm very grateful to be at the right place at the right time, but I did absolutely nothing more than any police officer would have done in this department," Reed said Friday.

Fire and rescue workers transported the baby to a hospital Thursday night.

The 21-year-old woman was taken to the hospital for evaluation and has been identified as the baby's mother. The baby's father arrived at the scene during the incident and talked with investigators.

The baby was released to other family members Friday and is expected to make a full recovery, police said.

Reed said he was glad to have the chance to help.

"Those big, beautiful brown eyes looking at you at the hospital; I was very thankful to be part of that," Reed said.

Detectives and Child Protective Services are still investigating the incident and said criminal charges are possible.
