Man, 18, Dies After Assault in Montgomery County Park

An 18-year-old man died Sunday after he was assaulted in a park in Montgomery Village, Maryland, police said.

Oscar Vidal Benitez, of Gaithersburg, died after he was attacked about 10 p.m. in the parking area of Centerway Park, Montgomery County police said.

Authorities believe Benitez knew his attacker or attackers and that he had gone to the park to meet them.

Benitez went to Holy Cross Germantown Hospital, where he died. Two other people hurt in the incident went to the hospital too, and at least one person fled after Benitez died and hospital staff called police.

Investigators spent hours at the scene collecting evidence, including a plank of wood with a nail sticking out of one end.

Discarded crime-scene tape could be seen Monday across from a playground area at the park.

"It's definitely concerning because whenever we come, I might bring my nephews," a man who grew up in the area said. "Something like that definitely shouldn't be happening in a park."

Authorities said the public is not at risk. A homicide investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information on the crime is asked to call police at 240-773-5070. Anyone who wishes to stay anonymous can call 1-866-411-TIPS. A reward of as much as $10,000 is offered.
