Local Nonprofits Win 21st Century Solutions Grants

A nonprofit that shapes young male inmates into role models, an organization aiming to end D.C. homelessness and a community group bringing small businesses and the arts to Anacostia are getting a total of $100,000 in grants from NBC4 and the NBCUniversal Foundation.

Free Minds Book Club & Writing Workshop, Miriamโ€™s Kitchen and Arch Development Corporation are all winners of the 21st Century Solutions grant challenge. They were chosen by a community panel.

Free Minds Book Club & Writing Workshop is the recipient of a $50,000 grant to help incarcerated youth return to their communities and become leaders. Its re-entry program provides employment support, computer skills training and an apprenticeship.

Miriamโ€™s Kitchen will receive $25,000 for its efforts to end homelessness. The grant will go toward its initiative โ€œRaising the Voices of our Guests to End Homelessness in DC,โ€ in which formerly homeless residents help currently homeless people transition into a more stable lifestyle.

Arch Development was awarded $25,000 for its small business incubator, which offers office and meeting spaces for the neighborhood residents. The money may also support its arts and culture center.

โ€œThe impressive three that will receive grants this year are making a real difference for the people and communities in our area.โ€ NBC4 President and General Manager Jackie Bradford said.

The grant challenge is in its fourth year. For more information, visit our 21st Century Solutions page.
