Mount St. Mary's Chapel Fire Contained

Late Friday evening crews battled flames at the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception at Mount St. Mary's University in Emmitsburg, Md.

According to the Frederick News-Post, the fire was reported just before 9 p.m. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and as of 10:50 p.m. the fire was contained.

Officials said the flames may have been caused by a lightning strike to the chapel's bell tower.

Public Safety Director at Mount St. Mary's University Barry Titler told News4 damage to the tower was extensive.

"We will rebuild," Titler said.

No injuries were reported.

The chapel was built in 1910.
