Washington Times Adds Unpaid, Nonprofessional Journalists

WASHINGTON -- The Washington Times will run one full page a day with community news reported and written by unpaid, nonprofessional journalists.

Executive editor John Solomon describes the citizen journalists' work as a complement to the newspaper's paid staff, saying the Times is "excited to empower citizens."

Contributors will be provided with rules for their reporting and writing and copies of the newspaper's policies on ethics, anonymous sources and other journalistic standards.

The community page will run six days a week as part of the newspaper's metro coverage inside the A section. Each day's page will have a different focus: academia, the Maryland and Virginia suburbs, the District of Columbia, local military bases, faith communities and the charitable and public service community.
