Millions to Participate in “Great Shakeout” Earthquake Drill

Over 1.5 million people in D.C., Maryland and Virginia are participating in a earthquake drill Thursday.

The third annual "Great SouthEast ShakeOut" is set for Thursday at 10:15 a.m.

Officials says the drill provides an opportunity to practice the recommended response to an earthquake. The basic drill is to drop, take cover and hold on.

In 2011, a magnitude-5.8 earthquake centered in Mineral, Va., shook the densely populated Eastern seaboard, with people as far away as Canada reporting feeling the impact.

Delaware, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and West Virginia are also participating in the "Great SouthEast ShakeOut".

Individuals, families, schools and organizations can sign up for the drill online here.
