VRE Riders Should Prepare to Pay Up

Exec asks for 7 percent increase

ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- Another fare hike may be in store for Virginia Railway Express riders.

The commuter line raised its fares 3 percent in July. Now, VRE chief executive Dale Zehner plans to ask the board of directors on Friday to approve another 7 percent increase.

VRE officials said it's needed to cover the escalating costs of fuel and maintenance, WTOP radio reports.

Officials originally considered a 15 percent increase, but decided that 7 percent would provide the most additional revenue without driving customers away. They said that if fares are not increased, they may have to cut service.

If the increase is approved, a one-way trip from Fredericksburg to Union Station would increase from $9.10 to $9.70. A one-way trip from Manassas Park to L'Enfant Plaza would go from $7.45 to $8.
