Tough Times for Doggy Retirement Home

It's a retirement home for dogs, and it's almost out of money.

The House With a Heart in Laytonsville, Md., cares for older dogs that have little chance of finding a new home.

Tough economic times mean that more people are deciding they cannot afford to care for older dogs, which often require expensive veterinary treatments. Meanwhile, the House With a Heart is experiencing troubles of its own.

Sher Polvinale, who runs the house, was counting on life insurance money from her late husband to take care of her -- and, in turn, the dogs -- for another 30 years. Unfortunately the money was invested and now, after the past year's huge losses on Wall Street, Polvinale said it's almost gone.

Polvinale and the 19 dogs under her care have to depend on volunteers, contributions, and dog daycare clients. Still, Polvinale said she is devoted to caring for the dogs until the end of their lives.
