Sky-High Airfares

Travelers pay more than ever before

The holiday travel season is almost here, and if you plan on flying, you'll be paying more than ever.

Domestic air fares have reached a record high, according to the Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

In the second quarter of 2008, travelers were paying an average of $352 for a domestic flight. That's the highest fares have been since the government started keeping track 13 years ago.

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport ranked fifth in the nation in terms of airfare increases. The average domestic fare at the airport is now $419. That's up more than 17 percent from a year ago.
