Mistrial Declared in Man's 2nd Trial in Slaying of NC Teen

A second trial for a man accused of killing a North Carolina teenager has ended in a mistrial.

Baltimore Circuit Judge John Addison Howard declared the mistrial Monday at the request of lawyers for 30-year-old Michael Johnson.

Johnson was being tried for second-degree murder in the death of 16-year-old Phylicia Barnes of Monroe, North Carolina. Barnes disappeared in December 2010; her body was found months later floating in the Susquehanna River.

A spokeswoman for Maryland Courts says evidence was presented to the jury even though defense and prosecuting attorneys agreed it would not be.

Johnson was convicted of second-degree murder of Barnes' death in 2013. A judge ordered a new trial after ruling that prosecutors withheld evidence about their key witness.
