McDonnell Continues To Plead With Pentagon Over BRAC Moves

Gov. Bob McDonnell (R-Va.) is once again pleading with the Pentagon to delay moving thousands of its employees to the Mark Center in Alexandria.

McDonnell says the relocation of more than 6,000 defense employees to the Mark Center – located just off I-395, far from the nearest Metro station – will cause traffic nightmares.

The employees are slated to move as a part of BRAC, the Base Realignment and Closure process, which, according to a Congressional mandate, must be complete by September 15.

In a letter to Leon Panetta, the newly confirmed Secretary of Defense, McDonnell asks for a delay in this relocation to allow the state to adapt its infrastructure to accommodate the thousands of new commuters.

A similar letter from McDonnell to Panetta’s predecessor at the Pentagon, Robert Gates, garnered no response.
