Historic Bank Begins Distributing DC Quarter

WASHINGTON -- Industrial Bank handed out free quarters along D.C.'s historic U Street Corridor Thursday.

The free money celebrated the D.C. quarter featuring the likeness of native son Duke Ellington. Each quarter given away was among the first D.C. quarters distributed to the public.

D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton said she hopes the quarter will spark interest in "local" Washington.

The U.S. Mint is making 172 million of the quarters as part of its program honoring the 50 states.
